GENERAL LICENSING QUESTIONS
Why are licenses important, even for non-profits, schools, etc.? Licenses are required to legally perform copyrighted works and ensure that the creators, playwrights, and rights holders are compensated for their work. This applies to all organizations, including non-profits and schools, as the performance of a play constitutes the public use of someone else’s intellectual property.
Why must schools obtain a license for performances involving audiences outside the class? Performances for audiences beyond the classroom—such as parents, community members, or other external groups—are considered public performances. These require a license to ensure proper permissions are in place and to compensate the rights holders appropriately.
What if I'm not charging for tickets? Even if tickets are free, a license is required for any public performance. The act of performing a play for an audience, regardless of ticket sales, is a public use of copyrighted material and requires proper authorization to ensure compliance with copyright law.
PRICING AND ROYALTIES
How is the licensing fee determined? Fees are based on factors like the size of your venue, ticket prices, and the type of production (amateur or professional). Once you submit your request, we will provide a quote tailored to your needs.
Do I need to pay royalties in addition to the licensing fee? Royalties are included in the licensing fee and are typically calculated per performance.
